Betty Chess passed away peacefully at home on August 13, 2025.
concluding a life that spanned 93 years, all of them rooted deeply in her beloved hometown of
Canon City.
A daughter of Harry and Mae Van Alstyne, Betty was born on March 9, 1932, and remained a
constant presence in her community throughout her life. On June 23, 1954, she married her
soulmate, Bud Chess; their union lasted just two months shy of 70 years before Bud's passing in
2023.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Dorothy Van Alstyne, and brother, Joe Van
Alstyne; husband, Bud Chess; daughter, Diana White; grandson, Bradley Chess; and son-in-law,
Don Pierce.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her children: Buck Chess and wife Jane, Irene
Pierce, Maureen Broughton, Ben Chess, and Bob Chess and wife Misty, along with 11
grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces,
nephews, and dear friends who treasured her presence.
Betty’s life was marked by caring, community, and leadership. She cherished gathering with
neighborhood women, especially during her years with the Home Demonstration Club, where
she formed lifelong friendships while raising six little ones. Her dedication shone through in her
long service as a 4-H leader, guiding youth with patience and enthusiasm.
As a lifetime member of the Fremont County Cattle Women, Betty served in numerous roles,
including President and Secretary, and was deeply involved in the Scholarship Program. She took
great joy in teaching grade school students about the cattle industry, passing on knowledge,
pride, and tradition to younger generations.
Betty’s legacy is woven through the countless lives she touched—with wisdom, camaraderie, and
her unwavering love for Canon City. Her life exemplified devotion to family, education,
agriculture, and her community. Her memory endures in the hearts and actions of all who were
fortunate enough to know her.
