Dixie June (Hovey) Hook passed away February 11, 2024, in Canon City, CO at the age of 91. She battled dementia for several years. Her family comforted her during her final days.
Born July 31, 1932, to parents, Albert Lee Hovey and Sylvia Viola (Douglas) Hovey, she grew up as an only child in the mountains of the 4-Mile area. She had a close-knit family with only cousins and nature as her playmates. Sundays always included dinner with her grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
Dixie attended the one-room Kitridge School until 9th grade, and then went to Cripple Creek High School, graduating in 1950 as valedictorian. She then attended beauty college in Colorado Springs.
She married her high school sweetheart, Bill Hook in 1950 and they lived in San Diego, CA, for two years. After moving back to Colorado, she devoted her life to raising their four children and gardening, canning, making jelly, and being the best mom ever. She loved family, animals, and reading.
She enjoyed fishing, camping, square dancing, and playing cards with her friends. Even though she enjoyed quiet and solitude, she became a member of the Orchard Park Extension Club, Rebekahs, volunteered for Meals on Wheels and at Skyline Elementary School. She became a very independent lady later in life, even buying a mobile home in Queen Creek, AZ, where she spent several winters. She also joined the Red Hat Society while there.
She leaves behind her beloved children, Jim (Luanne) Hook of Bluff, UT, Debbie (Dave) Dickens, Alan Hook, and Monica (Ken) McGowan, all of Canon City, CO; also, she was proud of her 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 3 great, great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by Bill Hook and her great grandson, Kaiden.
The family would like to thank the dedicated and loving care givers who helped Dixie remain at home until she required a higher level of care. The family is also very grateful for the staff of Hildebrand Care Center and Sangre de Christo Hospice for their loving support and care.
At her request, cremation has taken place and a gathering to celebrate her life will be held later in July at the 4-Mile Cemetery. Services have been entrusted to Holt Funeral Home.
