Donald Atencio Obituary

Donald Ray Atencio, 74, of Canon City, Colorado, was called to the Lord unexpectedly on Friday, February 27, 2026, in Canon City, Colorado.

Don was born on April 9, 1951, in Salida, Colorado, to Ralph and Irene Atencio. He graduated from Canon City High School in 1970 and went on to join the National Guard. He worked at Western Forge for 13 years and then at Portec for 34 years.

Don was known for his gentle kindness, generosity, helping hand, loving spirit, and for always being there whenever anyone needed anything.

He enjoyed many activities such as playing the guitar, softball, bowling, camping, being outdoors, working on his cars, and fixing anything he could get a tool on. He especially loved going to Cripple Creek, spending time with his family, and sitting back with a beer in hand, having a good conversation and an even better laugh with family and friends.

Don is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Cinda Atencio; his children, Brian (Ashley) Atencio, Desiree (Jeremy) Nix, and Adam Atencio (Destiny Dunaway).

He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Brianna (JJ) Masopust, Ashton Atencio (Adam Garcia), Zerick Atencio, Kayleen, Lincoln, Keely Nix, Alex, Cadence, and Liam Atencio.

Don is further survived by his brothers, Kenny (Sandy), Lloyd (Vangie), Jerry, and Ronnie (Debbie) Atencio.

He is also survived by his in-laws, Vic (Janet), Joe, Ernie (Donna) Martinez, Bea Cash (Jim Gindro), and Nancy (Kory) Barth, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Don is preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Irene; his brothers, Johnny and Richard; his sister, Francis; and his brother-in-law, Fred Martinez.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026, with a viewing at 10:00 a.m. and the service at 11:00 a.m. at Christ First Community Church, 801 Main Street, Canon City, Colorado. A reception will follow at Canon City VFW.

Don will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
