It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Dean Darnell, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who left us on January 20, 2025, just two days shy of his 77th birthday. Born on January 22, 1948, in Woodward, Oklahoma, Don's life was a testament to resilience, love, and unwavering spirit.
Don was the cherished son of Ike and Mary Darnell. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Willie Darnell, who he married on December 11, 1972, in Scott City, Kansas. Their bond was unbreakable; they stood by each other through life's trials and joys until Willie was called home in January 2021. Don's heart ached for her every day, and he longed to reunite with her in the eternal embrace of love.
Throughout his life, Don faced challenges with courage, including his service in the Vietnam War after enlisting in the US Marine Corps right after high school. His dedication to his country was a source of pride for him, and he wore his veteran status with honor, frequently seen in his Marine shirts and a veteran hat that he proudly sported.
Don spent many years as a dedicated employee at Big D's Superfoods, where he served as the Produce Manager. His retirement was marked by the effects of Agent Orange, but he never let his struggles define him. Instead, he embraced life, filling his days with joy and laughter, particularly in the company of his family.
Don was a devoted father to his children, Troy Darnell, Misty Darnell, Tisha Darnell, and Terry Thill. He took immense pride in his role as a grandfather to his grandchildren: Macayla, Brandon, Amber, Jenna, Robert, Chase, Christopher, Caleb, AJ, Christian, Alyssa, Caiden, and Ally. The family circle widened with the arrival of his great- grandchildren, Hazel and Alexander, who brought him tremendous joy.
In addition to his family, Don was an active member of the River City Vineyard church, where Sundays became a cherished tradition. He found solace in worship and expressed a deep desire for all his children and grandchildren to join him in praising the Lord. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, providing him with strength and hope.
Don had a zest for life that was evident in his hobbies and interests. He loved golfing and bowling, never missing an opportunity to hit the lanes or the greens. His passion for sports extended to watching football and wrestling and enjoying countless movies, always having a stash that could rival any rental store. Don also had a compassionate heart; he was devoted to causes close to his heart, donating to St. Jude's Children's Hospital and the Wounded Warriors Project.
He is survived by his loving children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward his legacy of love, generosity, and fun. He is also preceded in death by his parents, Ike and Mary Darnell, his brothers Floyd and Jerry Darnell, his sister Oleta Brankel, and grandsons Dominick Drosche and Braydon Snyder; who will greet him with open arms in the afterlife.
The memory of Donald Dean Darnell will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His funeral service will be held on January 30, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the River City Vineyard, located at 245 S. Raynolds, Canon City, CO 81212. We invite all who knew him to come celebrate his life and share in the love and laughter he brought to us all. Graveside services and then reception at the Vineyard directly following.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Don's memory to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the Wounded Warriors Project to honor his legacy of compassion and service.
Donald Dean Darnell may have left this world, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide all who were blessed to know him. Rest in peace, Don—you will be dearly missed.
