Elaine Shirley Woolsey, lovingly known as "Gramma", passed away peacefully on
February 28, 2026, in Canon City, Colorado, at the remarkable age of 97. Born on
December 21, 1928, in Mankato, Kansas, Elaine lived a life filled with love, dedication,
and cherished memories.
Elaine was the daughter of Harry and Alta Young, a close-knit family and grew up
alongside her brothers Merle Young, Carl Young, and Lloyd Young, all of whom
preceded her in death. She carried the values of hard work and compassion throughout
her life. Elaine built a career as a clerk and secretary for Rio Grande Motorway, where
her diligence and attention to detail left a lasting impression.
Elaine married Robert Woolsey, with whom she shared 61 wonderful years before his
passing. Together they raised a loving family that became the cornerstone of her life.
She is survived by her children: David and Sheila Woolsey; Pam and Jim Rogers; and
Roger and Melissa Woolsey. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Raquel
Woolsey; Bart and Frances Woolsey; Otis and Courtney Rogers; Bobby and Elyse
Rogers; Shelby Woolsey; and Lane Woolsey. And Great Grandchildren Sofia Carlock,
Camille Woolsey, Arya Woolsey, Roxanne Rogers, and Ben Rogers. Elaine was
preceded in death by two beloved grandchildren, Heather Woolsey and Dylan Billingsly.
Known for her warmth and generosity, Elaine had an extraordinary ability to make
everyone feel like family. She was affectionately called "Gramma" by those who knew
her. Her home was always open to loved ones and even stray cats that she cared for
with tenderness. Elaine’s famous peanut brittle became a symbol of her hospitality—a
treat that brought joy to countless gatherings.
Elaine found joy in simple yet meaningful pursuits. She was an avid cook whose meals
were prepared with love, a gardener who nurtured beauty from the earth, and a skilled
crocheter whose creations warmed both body and soul. Her involvement in 4-H
reflected her commitment to community service and fostering growth in others. The
family cabin held special significance for Elaine and Robert as a place where treasured
memories were made, they made special and lifelong friends, Roger and Kathie
Jones.
A proud Methodist, Elaine’s faith guided her throughout her life. Her giving spirit
extended beyond her immediate circle as she touched the lives of many with kindness,
wit, and an unwavering sense of care.
Elaine’s adventurous side earned her the nickname "Granny Oakly" reflecting the
spirited personality that endeared her to all who crossed her path. Whether sharing
stories or offering sage advice, she left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to
know her. Avid supporter of the 2nd Amendment.
Elaine Shirley Woolsey will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives
she enriched. May the memory of her love, humor, and generosity bring comfort to
those who mourn her passing.
A celebration of Elaine's life will be held after funeral (Potluck at Residence of Roger
Woolsey). In lieu of flowers or other tributes, those wishing to honor Elaine are
encouraged to donate to the Humane Society in their own communities—a fitting tribute
to a woman who gave so much to others. A Graveside Service per Elaine's request will
be held on March 6, 2026, from 11:00 AM at Lakeside Cemetery 1008 Elm Ave.
