Eldred Chicoine was born January 20, 1928, in Sioux City, IA, to parents, Elmer Chicoine and Louise Ryan Chicoine. He was the youngest of 6 children and lived on the family farm where they had milking cows and the fields were plowed with horses and later tractors.
During his early years, he attended a one-room country school where his oldest sister was his first-grade teacher. After graduating from high school in Jefferson, SD, he went on to study at South Dakota State University. Eldred taught Vocational Agriculture in Rutland and Beresford, South Dakota. He married Beverly Connors on June 24, 1950, in Jefferson, SD. He was drafted into the US Army in 1952 and served as a combat engineer during the Korean War. Eldred was awarded the Korean War service medal with two battle stars and discharged as Sergeant First Class in 1954. He continued to teach until 1964 when he continued his career as Superintendent of Schools. The family moved from Beresford to Woodland Park, CO in 1972 and then to Kremmling, CO in 1981. Bev and Eldred retired to Canon City, CO in 1992.
He was an active member in church ministries and various service organizations in their communities. Eldred enjoyed bowling, tennis, golf, and running. He and Bev also enjoyed square dancing, bridge games and were married for 66 wonderful years.
Eldred was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters; wife, Beverly; and daughter, Terese Henson.
He is survived by daughters: Carol (Gary) Leitner, Linda (Mike) Armijo, and Janet (David) Voigt; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am, Friday, April 14, at St. Michael Catholic Church, Canon City, CO; with Vigil and Rosary at 5 pm, Thursday, April 13.
