Geoffery Ormandy Obituary

Geoffery (Geoff) Lynn Ormandy, born on December 21, 1943, in Washington D.C., was called home to the loving embrace of Christ on May 14, 2026.

Geoff was preceded in death by his sister, Sandra (Sandy) Johnson; mother, Norma (Lynne) Ormandy; and father, Lesley (Les) Ormandy.

Geoff grew up in Duluth, Minnesota and loved to tell stories of camping, hunting, and fishing in the north woods. After attending the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Geoff enlisted in the US Army during the Vietnam era and was quickly selected for the officer candidate school. His army career brought him to Fort Carson and Colorado Springs where he met and married the love of his life, Jeanine A. Field.

After separating from the Army, Geoff worked for the next twelve years as a reporter and photographer for the Daily Record in Canon City, CO, where he interviewed many A-list actors making movies at Buckskin Joe's, including John Wayne. Geoff continued his newspaper career as the editor of the Pueblo Chieftain before accepting a position with Fremont Sanitation District. After a dedicated career with Fremont Sanitation District, Geoff retired in 2003 with more than 20 years of service to Canon City and Florence. Geoff spent the next decade running the Penrose Sanitation District on a part-time basis.

Geoff loved the outdoors and spent many hours walking, hiking, fishing, biking, and

cross-country skiing. As a teenager, he biked the length of Lake Superior's North Shore and he biked the Big Sur shoreline while posted to Fort Ord, California in 1967. He also took his son and nephews on canoe trips to the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota. Geoff enjoyed traveling and took many trips with friends and family around the US, Europe, and the Caribbean.

As a lover of photography, he was seldom seen without a camera. His ability to quickly start up a conversation with strangers created opportunities for candid portraits that were often featured in the Daily Record. Many people requested reprints of those pictures years later, saying that Geoff had captured something special in those photographs.

Geoff was a member and former elder of Christian Family Fellowship church. He served on the city council for Canon City from 1983 to 1987. He was an active member of the University of Men's Club and served on the Fremont County Community Concert Association board and the Friends of the Museum board.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jeanine Ormandy; daughters, Amy Keeney and Crista Ormandy; son, Toby (Mandy) Ormandy; granddaughter, Kayla (James Hagerman) Ormandy; grandson, Jacob Denton; and great granddaughter, Averie Hagerman.

A celebration of life will be held at 11am on July 11, 2026, at Christian Family Fellowship Church: 1011 Monroe Ave, Canon City, CO.
