Harley Eugene McDowell, age 88, of Canon City, Colorado, went to be with the Lord on April 12, 2024. Born on August 9, 1935, in the very same town, Harley rendered 33 years of dedicated service to the Colorado Department of Corrections before his retirement.
A man who cherished the outdoors, Harley's hobbies included fishing, hunting, and tending to his garden. He was also an avid square dancer. Harley's presence was a familiar sight at his grandchildren's various sports and academic events, where along with his beloved wife, Nadine, they were affectionately known as Grandma and Grandpa by many.
Harley's memory is honored by his children, Michele N. Hutchison, Martin W McDowell, and Renee McDowell; his grandchildren, Misty B Hinkle, Derek A Hansen, Danielle A. Blackburn, and Savannah R McDowell; as well as his five great-grandchildren. He rejoins in peace his wife, Nadine Marie McDowell; and their infant daughter, Michele Luree, both of whom preceded him in death.
The family invites friends and loved ones to a traditional Celebration of Life for Harley, which will be held at the Steeple in Canon City on May 31, 2024 at 1pm. A reception will follow the memorial, where those gathered can share in the joy of the life Harley lived and the legacy he leaves behind. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Orchard of Hope Foundation, 111 North Orchard Avenue, Canon City, CO 81812.
