Jennie Lilly (Martinez) Avila was born on December 17, 1921, the daughter of Don and Emma Martinez. She received her crown of life and was escorted to Heaven on May 22, 2022, surrounded by family. She was married on December 22, 1945, to Baltazar Avila. Together they had 13 children, followed by 34 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren, and 31 great-great-grandchildren.
Jennie was a graduate of the University of New Mexico, Santa Fe in 1942. As an advocate for families, she worked for over 20 years with Fremont County Head Start as a Social Service Provider. In her work, she also facilitated parenting classes for incarcerated parents. To her family, she was known to love fishing, gardening, and dancing with her husband. Most of all she loved watching things grow, especially her family.
Jennie is survived by Larry (Edna) Avila, Yolanda Avila, Evangaline Avila, Donny Fernandez, James (Lois) Avila, Greg (Karen) Avila, Louisa Avila, Hope (Mike) Matthews, Vivian Avila, and Mark Avila.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Baltazar Avila; infant daughter, Doris Marie Avila; sons, Charles and Timothy Avila; daughter-in-law, Deloras Fernandez; and two grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, May 27, 2022, at Holt Family Funeral Home in Canon City, CO. Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at Mesa Church: 917 S. 2nd St., Raton, NM 87740. Her final resting place will be in Palo Blanco, New Mexico with her husband and near her childhood family home.
