Joseph Vicari Obituary

Joseph Charles Vicari, lovingly known as “Papa Joe,” passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026, in Cañon City, Colorado, at the age of 88. He was born on December 21, 1937, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, to Charles and Alice Vicari.

Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he worked as a dental assistant. Following his service, he built a successful career as a Plant Manager for Salem Oil and Grease, a leather tanning company, where he faithfully worked for over 25 years. His dedication and strong work ethic reflected the steady, loyal man he was.

Together with his beloved wife, Lilla Dee Vicari, Joe later enjoyed traveling to all 50 states, creating a lifetime of memories along the way. Whether reminiscing about life back East, family trips on the boat at Blue Mesa, or enjoying fresh lobster and clams, Joe held a deep love for the people, places, and experiences that shaped him. That same adventurous spirit led him across the Royal Gorge Zip Line in his mid-80s — although the man claimed not to be a day over 37 when asked his age.

Joe was known for his unforgettable voice and distinctive storytelling. He often joked that he didn’t have an accent, insisting that everyone else “sounded funny.” He didn’t just tell stories — he brought them to life. Rooted in his East Coast upbringing, his bold, playful humor and confidence made him impossible to forget. And when he asked, “Are you guna buy me lobsta and clams?” the answer better be “yes.”

More than seafood, Joe loved his family fiercely. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and the cherished “Papa Joe” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His bear collection was impressive, and his cheerful humming — “Do do do do do do do” — will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him.

Most importantly, Joe’s life was anchored in his faith in Jesus Christ. His quiet strength, resilience, and enduring hope were rooted in that faith, and his family rests in the comfort of knowing he is now at peace in the presence of his Savior.

Joe is survived by his children, Joseph (Donna) Vicari, James Vicari, and Jodee (Keven) Zerby; eight grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Kenneth Vicari, Shelia (Chuck), and Skippy (Sherri), along with extended family and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Lilla Dee Vicari; his parents, Charles and Alice Vicari; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ray Roy and LoAve Garton; his sister and brother-in-law, Virgil and Shirley Scheffe; his sister-in-law, Jean Vicari; his daughter-in-law, Lynn Vicari; and his great-grandson, Brycen James Zerby.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at E-Free Church, followed by a graveside service at Lakeside Cemetery, where Joe will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Lilla Dee Vicari, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.

Joe’s legacy lives on in the laughter he sparked, the stories he told, the courage he carried through every season of life, and the family who will forever hold him in their hearts.
