LaVerna Grant passed away Monday evening, August 10, 2020 at the Legacy Center Assisted Living Facility in Canon City.
LaVerna was born April 12, 1927, in Canton, Kansas to Pearl D. Carifel and William Duby. She grew up near Hutchinson, Kansas, where she graduated from Hutchinson High School.
She married Loren Grant of Greensburg, Kansas, on April 3, 1960. She and Loren lived in Greensburg until Loren’s retirement as a postal service employee. She was an excellent homemaker and a serious servant to the community of Greensburg, volunteering for the Greensburg Meals on Wheels program for several years. Loren and LaVerna were both very active in the First Christian Church of Greensburg, Kansas, serving the church in various areas of evangelism and singing in the choir.
Upon Loren’s retirement they decided to move to a cooler and more stable climate and took up residency at 3022 Ute. This home was a place filled with much love and hospitality. After Loren’s death, LaVerna moved to a condo on White Pine Court.
During the many years of service to her church family, LaVerna held leadership roles: Elder, Christian Education Chairperson, Evangelism Chairperson, President of the Disciples Women Ministries, and Pioneer Club Director in the Children’s ministry. She taught Sunday School for children, youth, and adults. Besides her involvement at First Christian Church of Canon City, she served in support ecumenical groups like Mercy Today Ministries and Church Women United.
LaVerna Grant served the Lord and she will be missed dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband Loren, her parents, and her brother and three sisters and two nephews.
