Larry "Wayne" Etter Obituary

Larry Wayne Etter, known to all as Wayne, a man of quiet strength, deep kindness, and unwavering devotion, passed away on February 4, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on July 23, 1940, in Burlington, Colorado, Wayne’s life was a testament to determination, integrity, and love. From humble beginnings on the plains of eastern Colorado to building a life in Aurora, he carried himself with grace, humility, and an unmistakable sense of class.

Known for having the best “Stick Shift” Wayne had a passion for speed and competition, earning recognition as an awarded drag racer. Whether on the track or in life, he approached every challenge with skill, determination, and a calm confidence that inspired those around him. His contributions to the racing world were honored with his induction into the Colorado Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2014, cementing his legacy in the sport he loved.

Beyond racing, Wayne was a great collector of classic cars. He loved attending rod runs and sharing friendly banter with his friends.

While his professional accomplishments were admirable, it was Wayne’s character that truly set him apart. He was the kind of man who never needed to be the loudest in the room to leave a lasting impression. His humor was quiet and gentle, yet effortlessly sharp—he had a way of making people laugh with a simple remark or a perfectly timed smile. His presence was warm and reassuring, and his kindness was felt by all who knew him.

Another of Wayne’s passions was their family dogs.  Wayne and Mary had four Doberman Pinschers; Miranda, Prima, Athena, Daisy, and a border collie fittingly named Princess. He had a special bond with his dogs, each of whom brought him joy, companionship, and unwavering loyalty.

However, the greatest love of Wayne’s life was Mary. From the moment they married on January 30, 1971, their love was unwavering. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, adventure, and the kind of companionship that only deep, enduring love can bring.

Wayne was deeply loved by his family. He is survived by his brothers, Norm Etter, Curt Etter, and Dennis Etter; and his sister, Marcia Etter Diltz; his nieces, Rhonda Diltz and Jennifer (Diltz) Land, who held a special place in his heart, as did his grand-nieces, Payton and Savana Land. Each of them carries cherished memories of his wisdom, warmth, and humor.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, M. Jean Etter (2009) and Glenn Etter (1986).

Wayne was diagnosed with dementia, which later advanced into Alzheimer’s. True to her word and the vows they shared, Mary remained by his side, caring for him at home until his final days. When his condition required hospitalization, she, along with Wayne’s sister and nieces, continued to be his unwavering source of love and support until he passed peacefully a few days later. Though the journey was neither easy nor perfect, Mary’s steadfast devotion exemplified the true essence of a life partner, ensuring Wayne was surrounded by love, dignity, and comfort until the very end.

Wayne’s legacy is one of quiet strength, hard work, humor, and deep love. He will be remembered as a man of class, humility, and heart, who lived his life with purpose and brought joy to those around him.

A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his honor to a charity befitting of the man he was.

Rest in peace, Wayne.  Your gentle humor, kind heart and steady presence will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
