Laura Popp Obituary

Laura Janine Popp (Metts) was gifted to the world on March 3, 1961, to Curtis and Melba-Dean Metts.  She was a 1979 graduate of Cañon City High School.  She was the youngest of 5 children.

At a very young age Laura embraced all living things.  She would chase butterflies and lady bugs.  She would cry if anyone would step on an ant.  Laura grew a strong passion for animals as she got older.  She knew she couldn’t save all the animals, but she knew that any animal that crossed her path that she could make a difference for that one.  She never hesitated to slam on the brakes for a squirrel crossing the road.

Laura loved flower gardening and watching the birds in her backyard.  She became quite fond of the Hummingbirds and loved to feed them nectar for their seasonal journey.

Laura also loved Mother Earth.  She took on recycling anything she could to help with waste.  She donated her aluminum cans to the Cañon City humane society in efforts to help support them with funds to buy pet food.

Laura also loved to help others and give herself wherever she could.  She chose a career in Health care to spread her love.  She made many friends working for St. Joseph Manor and Progressive Care Center.  The friends she made sharing the same passion she held dear to her heart.

Those who knew Laura were always greeted with a smile, shared a laugh and were treated with respect.  Laura’s attitude towards life was positive, even through her own struggles.  She lived with kindness and love in her heart.

Laura is survived by her husband Michael Popp, daughter Donnell Campbell, Son-in-law Matthew Pizi, grandson Olin Pizi, and her best friend Nancy Greaver, whom she shared wonderful weekly lunch dates with for 16 yrs.  She is survived by so many other numerous other family and friends.  She will be missed terribly.

A Celebration of life for Laura will be held on 5/20/23 at Centennial Park 2PM as we greet the Spring season, Laura’s favorite season.  We will welcome all things green and colorful into our hearts, cherishing the growth that each Spring has to offer as Laura did.  All who knew Laura are welcome to the celebration.  We will be there come rain or shine. Snacks and Drinks will be provided, as well as bird seed to feed the ducks.

We hope you join us in celebration of Laura’s beautiful life, sharing memories and wonderful stories. In Lieu of flowers please make donations to Cañon City Humane Society.
