Matilda Jean Ahkeah

Matilda Jean Ahkeah passed away on Sunday, November 14, 2021, at the age of 46. Matty was a loving wife and mother.

Matilda grew up in the Navajo Nation. As a child, she would learn to play the piano and help her grandma at her sheep camp while singing Amazing Grace. Matilda loved to sing, so much so that in high school she joined the choir where they competed throughout the United States. Her favorite competition was in California.

When she graduated, she pursued a college degree but put that on hold when she got pregnant with her daughter, Nanobah. She later started a career as a law enforcement emergency dispatcher, where she worked for the San Juan County for several years until 2005 when they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. There she tamed a position with the Albuquerque Police Department as a police dispatcher. Within the same year, she met her now-husband, Christopher. In 2012 they moved to Canon City, Colorado where they settled down. There she took on a position with the Department of Human Services as a child welfare intake screener, which allowed her to be home more with her family. She spent this time enjoying cooking, gardening and working on the new family home. She also enjoyed taking day trips to the mountains with her husband, daughter, and fur babies.

Matilda’s personality was always optimistic with a bright outlook on life. Her contagious laugh and smile will be missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Christopher Lewis; daughter, Nanobah Ahkeah; father, Sammy Ahkeah; sisters, Rachel Slivers and Sami Ahkeah; and brother, Christopher Ahkeah.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2021, at Wilson Funeral Home in Canon City, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations be made to Kindred Kids Child Advocacy Center, in Matilda’s name.
