Mikal Kenneth Johansen, 84, recently of Cañon City, formerly of Westcliffe, passed away June 27, 2020. He was born May 3, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York to Hans and Fredrikke (Naley) Johannesen.
Although his life started on the east coast, he lived there and in many other places around the country but when he reached the Rocky Mountains he knew he was home. Mikal enjoyed almost two decades in Westcliffe, where he built his own house so that he had a view of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range from every window. Mikal loved traveling, sailing, fishing and even camping in his younger days. He had an amazing work ethic and worked at several establishments in Westcliffe including the detention center for the Custer County Sheriff’s Department and the local market. There was nothing that made him happier in recent years as meeting in small groups with others either at the local market, at a church potluck or wherever God led him. He became a self-taught master baker and enjoyed singing at church.
He is survived by his children, Mike (Cindy) Johannesen, Ken (Doreen) Johansen, Tracey (Keith) Bengtson; brother-in-law, Jerry (Sandy) Brown; Betty’s children, Ron Rogers and Bella Mastroianni and eleven grandchildren.
Mikal was preceded in death by his parents and beloved wife of 31 years, Betty (Brown) Johansen.
Memorial service, 10:30am Saturday, July 18, The Cowboy Church in Westcliffe.
