Nicholas Mohs Obituary

On Thursday, April 27th, 2023, Nicholas L Mohs, beloved husband, father, proud grandpa, and great-grandpa passed away from natural causes at the age of 86.

Nick was surrounded by his dear wife of 62 years and his two sons.

He was born in Cold Spring, Minnesota, on April 25th, 1937, to Nicholas and Geneva. One of ten children, five boys, and five girls. When Nick was 14 years old, the family moved to Kelliher, Minnesota where they established a working Dairy Farm. Thus began the roots of his strong work ethic, quick wit, amazing sense of humor, and the reputation as a “Man to Rely on and Someone to count on to get things done”.

Nick chose to pursue schooling in the agricultural field to expand the family business and upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy in 1955.

After his military service, his adventures took him to the mountains of Colorado in his 1958 Blue & White Ford Edsel, where he went to work at Climax Molybdenum Mine for a short time.

He transitioned to a job running a service station where he met his future wife, Jeanie. They were married in the winter of 1961. Nick’s outgoing personality naturally moved him to a career path in sales.

Nick started working for the Grand Music Co., a company selling jukeboxes, and consumer products. His role was selling snacks. He was discovered and recruited by the future president of Frito Lay Inc. This started his career as a Mountain Region District Manager for Frito Lay for over 25 years.

After retiring in 1993, He and Jeanie moved to Canon City. Not slowing down they golfed, camped, boated, fished, hunted, and enjoyed their passion for the outdoors. Gardening and woodworking were favorites too. During his time golfing he managed to get a hole-in-one, three times! Nick was also involved in the Lions Club, a life member of the Elks Lodge, and the Knights of Columbus.

He is preceded in death by his parents Nick and Geneva; sisters Laura, Katherine, and Margaret; his brothers Steve and John; and his grandson Nick IV.

He is survived by siblings Fran, Theresa, Ralph, and Mike; wife Jean; sons Nick (wife Mickey), and Mark (wife Amy); grandkids Shelby (Brandon) and Conner (Megan); and great-grandkids Fischer, Matthew, Rogan, Palmer Lynn, and Palmer’s soon to make an entrance, Little Brother.

Services will be held May 13th, 10:30 AM at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Leadville, Colorado.
