Obituary

Peter Paul Charles Ronco

February 5, 1934 ~ July 13, 2021

Pete Ronco, 87, was born in Rockvale, Colorado to Mary E. Cardone and Peter Paul Ronco. His father was a coal miner, and the family was poor, so he learned to work hard from a very young age. His first job was taking care of the animals and chopping and bringing in wood for the families cookstove.  As soon as he was old enough to drive a horse and wagon, he, and his brother Tony, hauled wood for Vezzetti’s Grocery Store in Rockvale. His father got paid $15.00 for each load of wood and he paid Pete and his brother $2.00 each.

Pete started school in Rockvale and then went to Florence High School through the 11th grade when he quit and went to work for the Vernetti’s truck garden and dairy farm in Brooster where he worked for about twenty years. He then worked for Kiabab Lumber Mill in Wetmore for three years before going to work for Ideal Cement at Portland in Florence, and then retiring after twenty-six years in 1996.

In 1970 he married Jackie Alpers of Canon City and the couple had five children: Ron (Deanna) Ronco of Black Forest, David (Jennifer) Ronco of Watergarden, Florida, Tami (Shawn) Turner of Bloomington Idaho, Lisa (John) Stenbak of Newport Oregon and Steven (Brittany) Ronco of Canon City, Colorado.

During his retirement he kept busy gardening and would take an occasional fishing trip. In 2010 he and Jackie served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at a historical site in Nauvoo, Illinois for 18 months.  After which they returned to gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, and children as well as twenty-six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, brother Tony, grandson Troy Ronco, and granddaughter, baby Maggie Ronco.

Services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on the corner of Elm and McKinley streets at 10:00 A.M. Monday July 19, 2021, with burial following at Lakeside Cemetery.
