Robert Fleming Obituary

Robert Ray Fleming, 63, of Canon City passed away suddenly at home on Tuesday, June 4.

He was a devout Christian who attended Christian Family Fellowship and Grandview Christian Church, both in Canon City.

Robert was born on June 29, 1960 in Denver, Colorado. He was adopted as an infant by Harvey Lee “H.L.” and Mary Ann Fleming of Canon City. Robert was born with disabilities, including being almost completely blind. However, he attended regular schools and worked his entire life to be seen as more than his physical problems.

He graduated from Canon City High School in 1979, and from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley in 1984 with a degree in elementary education. He earned his Master’s Degree in school counseling a few years later from Adams State University in Alamosa. Robert taught school in Denver and Kit Carson, Colorado, and as a substitute teacher in Fremont County. He also used his counseling degree as a volunteer Victim’s Advocate for several years.

Following a major stroke in 2010, Robert did not return to work. He lived with his widowed mother, Mary Ann, in Penrose until 2012 and in Canon City since then. Mary Ann passed away of complications of Alzheimer’s disease in August of 2022.

Robert is survived by his sister, Lee Ann, of Denver; and nephew, Benito Robert Gonzales, also of Denver.  He also leaves behind several close friends who helped care for him and whom he loved dearly, including Hoyet Williams, Gene and Patty Willyard, Amy Olsen and Daryl Epperson.

A celebration of life will be held at Christian Family Fellowship, 1011 Monroe Ave, on Wednesday, June 26, at 1 pm.
