Robert Carl Thompson, 79, of Canon City, CO, died unexpectedly at home on Sunday, May 19, within hours of returning home after having gallbladder surgery last Friday. Friends and family called him Bob.
The fourth of seven children, Bob was born in Dawson, MN in 1945 to Leland Howard Thompson and Mildred Lucille Thompson. The family moved to Colorado when he was 9 years old. In May of 1964, Bob married Darlene Fay Storm of Colorado Springs, (divorced 2005) and in 1966, he joined the Army, spending a year in Vietnam. Returning to Colorado Springs after three years in the Army, he took a job as a heavy equipment operator working for Tom Pinello Jr. Construction. In 1988, Bob started working as a heavy equipment operator for the City of Colorado Springs Utility Department. He met and fell in love with Pat Wright. In 2010, he and Pat moved to Canon City where he retired. Bob’s interests included playing guitar, team-roping, fly-fishing, and reading western or mystery novels.
Bob is survived by his sisters, Mary Hewlett and Donna Downs; brothers, Gene Thompson and Tracy Thompson; two children, Ramona Johnson and Charles Thompson; four grandchildren, Lisa, Joe, Evan and Brock; three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Pat Wright; sisters, Sharon West and Betty White.
A Memorial Service will be held at 12p.m on Thursday, May 30, 2024 at Holt Chapel of the Garden: 806 Macon Ave. Canon City CO 81212. A Graveside with Military Honors will follow at Lakeside Cemetery: 1008 Elm Ave. in Canon City.
