Ronald James Walsh, of Canon City, died on September 5, 2025. He was born in Dover, NJ., on February 25, 1933, to Edward and Laura (Smith) Walsh. He graduated from Hackettstown High School in 1951, served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955, and received a B.S. in Engineering from Lafayette College in 1959.
Mr. Walsh was an engineer with Bethlehem Steel Company from 1959 to 1975, and with Pittsburg Bridge and Iron from 1976 to 1981. In his second career, he became a structural steel iron worker for Bethlehem Steel in Pennsylvania, for Zimcor in Colorado, and on Antarctic crews at McMurdo and South Pole stations. In retirement he was a first responder for Custer County Search and Rescue from 1995 until 2000. He led a renovation project at the St. John Church on Pine Ridge Reservation and was a committed friend to Canon City's homeless. An outstanding basketball player, archer, swimmer, fly fisherman, rock climber, Andean mountaineer, and bicyclist- Ron gloried in physical challenges. He was a lover of wilderness, his animals, and all living things.
Ron married his wife, Patricia on December 21, 1973, at St. James Episcopal Church in Hackettstown, NJ., the town where they met and went to high school together. They retired in Colorado and have made their home in the We Mountains since 1990.
He is survived by his wife Pat and by his children; Pamela Kimberly Mazurek of Martinsville, VA., and John Edward Walsh of Coatsville, PA., and by his grandchildren Hillary, Violet, and Sophia Mazurek, and Megan and Hope Walsh.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Edward.
