Thomas Crutchfield Obituary

Tom was born in Jonesville, Virginia on November 2, 1940, to Harvey and Loretta Crutchfield. He grew up in
Bennetts Creek, Virginia where he helped his father build the family home for his family, Grandma
Burgett and Uncle Andy to live in. After graduating from Chuckatuck High School in 1959 he joined the United
States Army and served his country for six years. Tom was proud of his service and was very proud
American. He even decorated two of his canes with American flags.

He was stationed in Alaska and Ft Carson, Colorado. He purchased his first car while stationed at Ft. Carson. It
was a Mercury and was reported to be very fast, especially with Tom behind the wheel. The monies he
received in the service Tom would send the majority of it to support his family in Virginia, thus starting a habit
of contributing to various Christian charities his entire life. Tom always thanked God for providing the means
and being able to give to others, this was very important part of who Tom was.

After being discharged from the military Tom started a 35-year career with the Department of Corrections. He
started his career at “Old Max” where he met many “interesting & questionable” tenants. Later in his career,
he opened the Centennial Campus and that is where he finished his career in 2001.

In 2001 he married his wife Pat, making his new home with her in Canon City. During his lifetime Tom was
able to enjoy his hobbies and interests which included: guns, leatherwork, westerns and anything cowboys
and trains. He spent a lot of free time reading anything pertaining to his interests and his favorite author was
Louis L’Amour. Tom always had an interest in gunsmithing but never had an opportunity to pursue it but did
accomplish a great deal as a part time hobby. He was a humble and giving man with strong Christian
convictions. He always welcomed Jesus into every part of his life. Family was always important to him and he
valued every opportunity he had to be part of their lives.

Tom is survived by his wife Patricia (McFarland) Crutchfield, stepdaughter Mary Frances (Herman) Hoaglund
and step-son Gerald (Nancy) McFarland, brother-in-law George Johnson. Grandchildren: Kyle, Erin, Clayton
(Destiny), Rachel (Andrew) & Richard (Anna) and great-grandchildren: Emma, Connor, Rayden (his wild child) &
Maverick Thomas (his namesake). He was preceded in death by granddaughter Colleen Elizabeth.

If you would like to remember Tom please contribute to your favorite charity.
