Tracey Ruth Hampton passed away peacefully at 67 years old on October 1, 2025, surrounded by her
loving family in Cañon City, Colorado. Tracey was born on February 18, 1958, in Norfolk, Virginia, to
Larry and Bobbi Steele. She was the eldest of nine children, “Big Sister” was a title she was incredibly
proud of.
Tracey grew up in Penrose, Colorado, where she rodeoed on her Appaloosa, showed horses in 4-H,
served as the Apple Day Queen, and helped raise her younger siblings before moving to Fountain,
Colorado for her senior year. In Fountain, she competed on the high school rodeo team and graduated
in 1976. It was when she moved to Fountain that she met the love of her life, Donald August Hampton,
whom she married in May of 1978. Together they had three sons: Robert Paul Lee Hampton, Virgil
Donald Hampton, and Osha Melvin Coe Hampton. They quickly returned to Penrose to raise their family.
Tracey spent many of her younger years singing, hauling her boys to rodeos, fishing holes, and cooking
meals for all the cowboys. Her home, was the place they all wanted to be. Those years were ones she
spoke of often and always cherished. Once they got older, she proudly took on the title that meant the
most to her—Nana. Her grandchildren, Tristin Anne Rene Hampton and Osha Donald Lee Hampton,
quickly became the light of her life.
Tracey spent her professional career working in the hotel industry, beginning at the Four Seasons and
working her way up to Director of Marketing and Sales through many ownership changes—most notably
at the Hotel Elegante, where she worked for over 40 years. She then moved on to her dream job at the
Chamonix Hotel and Casino in Cripple Creek, before retiring in early 2025. Tracey spent much of her last
few years checking dreams off her list, always with her husband by her side.
Tracey is preceded in death by her parents Larry and Bobbi Steele, and her sister, Kim Miller. She is
survived by her husband, Donald Hampton; sons, Robert Hampton, Virgil (Mia) Hampton, and Osha
Hampton; daughter-in-law, Shei Simolon; and her grandchildren, Tristin Hampton, Osha Hampton,
Karter Baggett, and Gavin Baggett. She is also survived by her siblings Brenda Powell, Larry Steele, Scott
Steele, Twila (Ricky) Hallum, Trudie Statzer, Bobbi JoLean Davis, and Jo Megan Armstead, as well as
many beloved in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Tracey will always be remembered for her fierce and unconditional love of her family, her faith in Christ,
and her special love for Cripple Creek. We are blessed to have had so many wonderful years with her
and know that she is with her beloved mother and other loved ones in Heaven.
For those who may not have been aware, Tracey was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in July of this
year. Though her time was far too short, she faced her illness with strength, faith, and grace. Her family
supported her every step of the way as she endured numerous hospital stays and medical expenses that
came with her fight. The outpouring of love and support from family and friends during this difficult time
has meant more than words can express.
A service in Tracey’s memory will be held on October 18, 2025 at the Teller County Fairgrounds at 11:00
a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to TraceyRuthHampton on Give, Send, Go to assist with
